Great American Steamboat Co. is hiring 300 people for its inaugural year of Mississippi River cruises and the positions are in great demand. My Fox Memphis reports that hundreds of people attended the company's job fair held yesterday while thousands more have applied online. The company's employees will work six weeks on the boat followed by two weeks off, according to company president John Waggoner. FedEx Corp. has extended its sponsorship of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup through 2017. The Memphis-based shipping giant began its sponsorship in 2007, when it started a collaboration with the PGA for a competition based on a point system compiled over the course of the season. The FedEx Cup includes a total of $35 million in bonus money for players based on their point standings. The champion gets $10 million. Gannett, the country's largest newspaper publisher, plans to put up paywalls around the websites for all 80 of its community newspapers. Gannett (NYSE: GCI) officials made the announcement during an investor conference today, Forbes reports. The paywalls are to be in place by the end of the year. The Tennessean, Nashville's major daily newspaper, and The Clarion-Ledger, the major daily in Jackson, Miss., are part of Gannett's U.S. Community Publishing Division. For the third month in a row, the American Institute of Architects’ Architectural Billings Index scored higer than 50 pointing to a continuing industry recovery. The January score was 50.9 after hitting 51 in December and 52 in November. The index, compiled by AIA, is used to indicate a nine- to 12-month glimpse into non-residential construction spending. A score of 50 or above shows an increase in demand for design services. While the index had a similar fast start in 2011, Kermit Baker, chief economist for the AIA, said this year’s numbers are encouraging because numbers across the country are up... The Memphis City Council on Tuesday approved a $20 million renovation plan for the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. Memphis Daily News reports the museum will be required to raise half the money from private sources while the city will chip in the remaining $10 million over a period of years. The council also advanced $16 million in funding for improvements along Elvis Presley Boulevard in Whitehaven. The money would be spent over two fiscal years, according to the report.
